Installation of braces

The choice of the appropriate braces system is made by the orthodontist, based on the clinical picture of the disorder and taking into account the patient's wishes.

When installing braces, the doctor conducts a detailed clinical examination, including radiography and dental impressions. Based on the data obtained, he determines the nature and degree of orthodontic disorders, which allows choosing the most effective braces system. Patients are offered a choice between different types of braces, taking into account their aesthetic preferences.

Ligature Braces

Metal Ligature Braces
Metal ligature braces are the simplest system with a treatment period of about a year. This is a very effective treatment method, most often used for teenage patients. The archwire is fixed to the bracket with a special rubber band (elastic ligature). Such a fastening is difficult to move without special tools, providing a rigid fixation of the archwire.

There is a side effect to such fastening – it creates additional friction, which causes a counter-inflammatory reaction of the surrounding tissues and thereby slows down the speed of tooth movement. However, in some clinical cases, this friction effect is necessary for more quality control of the treatment.

Among the disadvantages are also the need for correction no less than once a month, discomfort in the first days after the system installation due to excessive pressure on the teeth, more complex oral hygiene, the possibility of ligatures staining with food dyes, slower tooth movement speed compared to self-ligating braces.
Ceramic Ligature Braces
Ceramic ligature braces are an aesthetic construction no less durable than metal, close in color to the enamel of the teeth, making it practically invisible. Mostly, such braces are installed by adults for a more aesthetic and prestigious appearance during orthodontic treatment.

An important point when wearing brace systems, is proper oral hygiene and adherence to the rules and peculiarities of eating with braces. The more components in the brace system, the higher the likelihood of contamination in spaces near these details.

When wearing ligature braces, it is possible for the color of the rubber band fixators (ligatures) to change due to the accumulation of dyes from food (tea, coffee, wine, juices). In case of noticeable color changes of the rubber bands, it is important to timely visit the orthodontist for their replacement and maintaining the optimal appearance of the brace system.

SELF-LIGATING BRACES

These are high-tech brace systems that allow for the correction of even very significant crowding of teeth in short terms. The advantages include:

1
Much easier to maintain oral hygiene due to the design of the brace itself and the absence of elastic ligatures, which contribute to plaque accumulation and retention of food residues.
2
The system correction can be done every 2 months.
3
This system is passive, meaning it has no friction. This reduces the load on the teeth, decreases the inflammation reaction in the surrounding tissues, and, as a result, increases the speed of teeth alignment. Suitable for treating patients with periodontal diseases.
4
Minimizes the feeling of pain and discomfort during the wearing stages of the system.
5
Reduces the time needed for system activation, due to the simplicity of installing and removing orthodontic arches. This allows the patient to spend less time in the chair with an open mouth.

Hygiene

Hygiene for all types of braces is carried out daily using an orthodontic toothbrush with soft or ultra-soft bristles, using sweeping motions from the gum to the cutting edge. To clean all the bends of the system, we also recommend using an irrigator (a device that emits a jet of water under pressure) for cleaning areas of the teeth that are difficult to reach with a brush, as well as using interdental brushes. It's better to carry an irrigator, a travel toothbrush, and toothpaste with you, as food particles often get caught on the small details of the braces.

Currently, we can also cover teeth with fluoride varnish, which does not wash off and stays on the enamel for up to six months. It isolates the tooth from the negative effects of plaque. If oral hygiene is not maintained while wearing brace systems, problems arise not only with tooth enamel but also with gums (inflammation, bleeding). It is recommended to perform professional oral hygiene in the clinic every 3 months, and in case of poor oral hygiene and gum inflammation – at every activation. Professional hygiene of the brace system is performed at each activation and is included in its cost.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How soon after removing braces can teeth whitening be done?
At least 2 weeks later, provided there are no contraindications.
When can braces be placed after pregnancy and lactation?
It is advisable to wait six months for the mother's body to fully recover.
Does wearing braces affect the quality of the tooth, enamel?
If the brace is of high quality and correctly installed, it does not damage the tooth or affect the enamel. Moreover, modern brace systems are installed on a cushion of material that releases fluoride, so the tooth under the brace is completely safe. No bacteria can get under a correctly installed brace, as a very tight adhesion is created between the surface of the brace and the enamel.
What characterizes an ideal patient in the context of caring for braces?
The best orthodontic patient is one who very closely follows all the orthodontist's recommendations. A good specialist 'guides' their patient at all stages of treatment: gives recommendations on hygiene, diet, prescribes preventive procedures, and provides necessary instructions. With the correct approach to the treatment process, the patient meets the treatment timelines stated by the orthodontist and minimizes financial costs.
